This workshop is now sold out. If you are interested in joining our Inside>>Out program, we encourage you to check the other workshops we offer.

As part of Inside>>Out, Magnum Learn in Albania, join Newsha Tavakolian for a 5-day workshop in Tirana, Albania, during which you will focus on telling intimate stories through visual storytelling, using existing and new work.

Through discussions and group crits, you will explore working intuitively to forge deeper personal connections with your topics and subjects. You will learn how to shoot from your heart, creating more meaningful images by listening to your intuition, as opposed to what you believe others want to see. You will be asked to create new work on a daily basis under the guidance of Newsha Tavakolian. The shooting advice will be based on your individual and personal practice.

Tavakolian’s background in documentary photography and the moving image will enable you to experiment with your different photographic styles during the workshop. This is an opportunity to tackle any questions and doubts you may have around creating a meaningful relationship with a project, as well as drawing out the personal in your work.

 

This workshop offers:

  • Tools to develop a photographic project centred on the personal.
  • Feedback on your existing body of work
  • Your work screened during a public event
  • Group crits with Newsha Tavakolian
  • Lectures by all Magnum photographers present during Inside>>Out

Following your enrollment, you will receive an email from the Magnum Learn Team to discuss payment arrangements. We offer the possibility to pay the 1700€ fee (minus the 425€ deposit) in one or two installments.

  • Full fees must be paid before the start of the workshop.
  • Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups if we do not meet the minimum number of participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice.
  • Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
  • Cancellations: Magnum will reimburse all the registration costs except for a 10% of the costs for administrative fee, if you inform us of cancellation at least 60 days before the first day of the Workshop. Beyond this time limit, we will charge the following: 50% of the cost if cancelled between 59 and 45 days before the Workshop commences. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 44 days before the Workshop commences.
The application process is operating on a first come first serve basis and participants can be accepted right up until the start of the workshop.
The fee covers: - internal travel to locations Does not cover: - accommodation, - travel to the workshop location, - meals
While we will not make booking arrangements for you, we will send a list of suggested hotels to encourage participants to stay in the same places.
We usually recommend participants to wait for the workshop to reach the minimum number of participants before booking their trips. As soon as the workshop is confirmed, we will send out an email meaning you can book your trip.
As soon as we reach the minimum number of participants we will notify everyone - leaving as much time as possible for you to book transport and accommodation if needed. If you sign up after the minimum number of participants has been reached we will let you know that the workshop is confirmed.
As part of our Terms and conditions, everyone taking a workshop is required to have insurance for the duration of the program.
We recommend everyone to arrive at the latest in the morning of Sunday 21 April and leave at the earliest on Saturday 27 April, 2024.
The remaining balance would need to be paid before the 1st of March 2024.
Applications are open to photographers from Albania or the Balkan countries. 8 scholarships will be offered.
Depending on availability, you can decide to join one of the other Inside>>Out workshops.

Magnum photographer

Newsha Tavakolian
Newsha Tavakolian is known for her powerful work covering wars in Iraq and social issues in her native Iran. With clarity and sensitivity, Tavakolian has photographed female guerilla fighters in Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria and Colombia, prohibited Iranian female singers and the lives of people living under sanctions. Over the years, her practice has shifted from photojournalism to photography as art. A self-taught photographer, Tavakolian began working professionally in the Iranian press at the age of 16, at women’s daily newspaper Zan. At the age of 18, she was the youngest photographer to cover the 1999 student uprising, which was a turning point for the country’s blossoming reformist movement and for Tavakolian personally as a photojournalist; a year later she joined New York-based agency Polaris Images. In 2003, she started working internationally, covering the war in Iraq. She has since covered regional conflicts, natural disasters and made social documentary stories. Her work has been published in international magazines and newspapers such as Time Magazine, Newsweek, Stern, Le Figaro, Colors, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, NRC Handelsblad, The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic. Commercial clients include Qatar foundation, who commissioned her to make a book about education around the world and Shiseido, who commissioned a two-year assignment looking at the meaning of beauty in Paris, France. Tavakolian became a Magnum nominee in 2015 and full member in 2019.
