Join Jérôme Sessini’s shooting workshop in Tirana and Bajram Curri in Albania, where the Magnum photographer made his first coverage of a conflict.

Back in 1998, Kosovo, which shares borders with Albania, entered a conflict in which ethnic Albanians opposed ethnic Serbs and the government of  Yugoslavia. Jérôme Sessini, a young photographer at that time, spent a few months there reporting the secession and its impact on the population.

As part of Inside>>Out, you are invited to re-visit this area of Albania. On the first day of the workshop, after his and Mark Power lectures, you will board a bus bound to Bajram Curri with your fellow participants. Shooting alongside Jérôme Sessini, you will create a photo essay of your choice relating to Albania’s history and the idea of remembrance. A public slideshow will be organised on the last night on the streets of Tirana, as part of the wider Inside>>Out public program.

Following your enrollment, you will receive an email from the Magnum Learn Team to discuss payment arrangements. We offer the possibility to pay the 1700€ fee (minus the 425€ deposit) in one or two installments.

  • Full fees must be paid before the start of the workshop.
  • Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups if we do not meet the minimum number of participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice.
  • Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
  • Cancellations: Magnum will reimburse all the registration costs minus a 10% admin fee, if you inform us of cancellation at least 60 days before the first day of the Workshop. Beyond this time limit, we will charge the following: 50% of the cost if cancelled between 59 and 45 days before the Workshop commences. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 44 days before the Workshop commences.
The application process is operating on a first come first serve basis and participants can be accepted right up until the start of the workshop.
The fee covers: - internal travel to locations Does not cover: - accommodation, - travel to the workshop location, - meals
While we will not make booking arrangements for you, we will send a list of suggested hotels to encourage participants to stay in the same places.
We usually recommend participants to wait for the workshop to reach the minimum number of participants before booking their trips. As soon as the workshop is confirmed, we will send out an email meaning you can book your trip.
As soon as we reach the minimum number of participants we will notify everyone - leaving as much time as possible for you to book transport and accommodation if needed. If you sign up after the minimum number of participants has been reached we will let you know that the workshop is confirmed.
As part of our Terms and conditions, everyone taking a workshop is required to have insurance for the duration of the program.
We recommend everyone to arrive at the latest in the morning of Sunday 21 April and leave at the earliest on Saturday 27 April, 2024.
The remaining balance would need to be paid before the 1st of March 2024.
Applications are open to photographers from Albania or the Balkan countries. 8 scholarships will be offered.
Depending on availability, you can decide to join one of the other Inside>>Out workshops.

Jérôme Sessini
Jérôme Sessini is one the world’s most prolific and respected names working in the sensitive field of conflict zones and has been dispatched to war-torn countries like Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Libya for international publications. As well as reporting on the frontlines, he has covered social issues such as the drug-related violence on the streets of Mexico, the anti-government protests in Ukraine and indigenous minorities in Cambodia facing forced eviction. Through his work, he is constantly learning, adapting and evolving. Since 2018, Sessini has been documenting the opioid crisis in the United States, where he has travelled to Ohio and Philadelphia to create intimate portraits of the people and places ravages by drug misuse. In 2017, Sessini travelled to remote villages in Cambodia with Samrith Vaing, documenting the life of indigenous minorities facing forced eviction. In 2016, Sessini documented the Kurdish Peshmerga offensive against Islamic State (IS) in the city of Bashiq before crossing the region to cover Iraqi forces pushing towards Mosul. His work has been published by prestigious newspapers and magazines, including Newsweek, Stern, Paris-Match as well as Le Monde and the Wall Street Journal. It has been shown in multiple solo exhibitions around the world including the Visa Photo Festival in Perpignan, at the Rencontres d’Arles, the Bibliothèque Nationale François-Mitterrand, as well as with the French Ministry of Culture. Sessini became a Magnum Photos nominee in 2012 and a full member in 2016.
