Description

A visual artist and photographer born and raised in Poland, Rafal Milach’s work is concerned with the changes taking place in the former Eastern Bloc.

Born in 1978, Milach studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland, before “falling in love” with photography and enrolling at the Institute of Creative Photography in the Czech Republic. In 2006, with ten other photographers from Central Eastern European countries, Milach founded Sputnik Photos, a collective dedicated to documenting the evolution of post-Soviet states.

Alongside photography, Milach has worked in a range of mediums, including video and collage. The First March of Gentlemen, the 2017 book from which this image is taken, is an example of that latter discipline, with Milach collaging archive photos from the 1950s and 1960s to tell the story of the children’s strike in Września, Poland.
