Eve Arnold took extended trips to China in 1979, totalling five months, in which she was able to travel freely with almost unlimited access. She followed her own itinerary some 40,000 miles back and forth across the mainland, accompanied only by her interpreter. The result is an incomparably complete and beautiful photographic portrait of China that shows the experience of those living in the vast and diverse land..
