Description

The film To Live, directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li and Ge You, is the story of a couple living through tumultuous periods of modern Chinese history, from the Chinese Civil War in the late 1940s to the Culture Revolution. Released in 1994, the film won the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival that year and Best Non-English Language film at the BAFTAs in 1995.

Pictured above is actor Gong Li on set, shot by Marc Riboud, in 1993. Riboud had been following the rapid changes in China for over thirty years, having first visited the country in the late 1950s.
