Robert Francis ‘Bobby’ Kennedy, was one of the most loved politicians in history and an icon of American liberalism. Having attended Harvard together in the late 1940s, he and Burt Glinn were friends and in 1968, Glinn spent several weeks photographing the politician as he toured the country for the Presidential campaign. On one particular occasion, as Glinn was boarding a press truck along with a crowd of photographers all hoping for a photo opportunity, he was invited to join Bobby and his wife in their convertible where – lying down to avoid ruining the picture for the other photographers – he was able to take this remarkable image.
Burt Glinn became an associate member of Magnum in 1951, along with Eve Arnold and Dennis Stock, before becoming a full member in 1954. He served as Magnum’s president twice.
