Description

From 2005 to 2007, Jonas Bendiksen documented life in the slums of four different cities; Nairobi in Kenya, Mumbai in India, Jakarta in Indonesia, and Caracas in Venezuela. Bendiksen, through the three-year project, captured the diversity of personal histories and outlooks found in the dense neighborhoods, and his work was published as a photobook, The Places We Live, in 2008.

Pictured here is a child illuminated by bright wedding decorations in Laxmi Chawl, a neighborhood of Dharavi and one of Mumbai’s biggest slums. This image is available as part of the Magnum After Dark Collection, celebrating nighttime photography from around the world.
