Trent Parke was twenty years old when he arrived in Sydney from his hometown of Newcastle, New South Wales. Moving from country to big city, his immediate reaction was a sense of loneliness and isolation. Parke decided to channel his emotions into his photography which resulted in Dream/Life, a five-year project documenting the city in a very different way from the typical view of Australia’s most populated city. “I wanted to present a truer version of Sydney — with lots of rain and thunderstorms, and darker qualities that inhabit the city — not the picture-postcard views that the rest of the world sees.”
