As part of a personal photographic exploration of her homeland’s traditions and customs, Lua Ribeira worked during the children’s Easter Celebrations in the industrial town of Puente Genil, in Cordoba.
Every year hundreds of biblical figures appear in Puente Genil’s streets for Semana Santa, as locals dress as apostles, evangelists, prophets, sibyls and Roman soldiers. The following week, sees the same celebrations played out by the children of the town, where they embody the same roles performed by their elders.
The resulting images invite us into a dreamlike world and ideal scenario for Ribeira to explore the function of popular mythologies as a means of attempting to grasp concepts such as life, suffering, death and morality. Ribeira is interested in both the normality and tradition that surrounds these events and their influence in forging a particular identity.
